Journey of the Oncorhynchus: A Story of the Pacific Northwest Salmon
4th - 6th grade

This student's 24-page story book, with large format pictures for coloring, depicts the life cycle of the Columbia River Chinook Salmon, from the viewpoint of Hydroid, a droplet of rain water. Back cover summarizes "Seven Ways to Save the Pacific Northwest Salmon." Prepared in June 1994 to be used during Hydromania II science camps for 4th-6th graders.

Voyage to the Pacific
5th - 9th grade

The fictional story of Leslie LaFont (probably 12 or 13) and her grandfather canoeing the Columbia River from its source in British Columbia to the Pacific Ocean, 82 days and 1,200 miles later. As they travel, Leslie learns about history, geography, fish, wildlife, dams and reservoirs, hydro power generation, the US-Canadian Treaty, and aluminum manufacturing. Includes a 41-centimeter by 56-cm (16-inch by 22-inch) fold out, pictorial map. This 22-page "Backgrounder," written for BPA by Portland author Robin Cody in July 1990, is appropriate for middle school ages, but would appeal to younger, capable readers.

The Magnificent Journey
6th - 10th grade

The life of a single wild Chinook salmon, Onco (short for Oncorhynchus tshawystch), told through text and pictures. We learn about all phases of the salmon's life cycle and the hazards the fish faces as she migrates from Idaho to the ocean, where she manages to survive for several years before heading back up the Columbia River to spawn and die. Includes a 41-centimeter by 56-cm (16-inch by 22-inch) poster. This 18-page "Backgrounder," was written in consultation with teachers and biologists in three states.

The Columbia River System: The Inside Story
11th - 12th grade

This publication presents a detailed explanation of the planning and operation of the multiple-use dams and reservoirs of the Columbia River system. It describes the river system, those who operate and use it, the agreements and policies that guide system operations, and annual planning for multiple-use operation. Revised in April 2001, it was published for the Columbia River System Operation Review (SOR), an environmental analysis conducted jointly by the US Bureau of Reclamation, US Army Corps of Engineers and BPA. This 78-page booklet was written at an adult level, but could be used by senior high school students working on special projects for science, social studies, political science, etc.

Hydro Power: How Electricity Gets from the River to Your House
4th - 6th grade

Through simple text and drawings, this four-page brochure explains how electricity gets from water in the river to your home to power lights and appliances at the flip of a switch. Ten questions or suggested activities aimed at the students are integrated into the text.
