Factors that affect insects

Many aquatic organisms make their home in overhanging and streamside vegetation. If this vegetation is removed for logging, mining, grazing or development purposes, then the delicate habitat is destroyed and the food chain is broken.

The diversity and size of population depends widely on the quality of stream water. For example, we have learned that dissolved oxygen concentrations are reduced with stream temperature and increased waterside vegetation. Therefore activities which affect temperature and vegetation growth, such as runoff from nitrogen rich farm land or warmed water releases from industrial plants, will lessen then small amount of dissolved oxygen present and decrease population.
