Wind Integration Initiatives
This initiative implemented operating protocols and communication tools to limit actual wind generation to schedule or curtail schedule to actual generation in response to the amount of balancing reserves deployed and was complete in fall 2009.
This initiative will develop systems and processes to enable wind generators to supply their within-hour generation imbalance from their own and/or contracted dispatchable resources.
This iniative will identify transmission path/ flowgate limits and establish credible, repeatable, and timely methodology to allow dynamic scheduling on BPA's transmission network and interties.
Utilities schedule generation and transmission by the hour. Enabling within-hour schedule changes will help wind generators manage within-hour schedule changes in response to over generation.
In 2008, BPA received 18 responses to a Request for Information on possible sources of balancing reserves. This project is on hold.
More accurate wind generation forecasts could greatly reduce costs of wind integration services. BPA is working with other utilities and wind project owners to develop more accurate long-term and short-term wind forecasts.
