Overview of Pacific Northwest Smart Grid Demonstration Project

BPA is a participant in this $178 million project led by Battelle Memorial Institute (Battelle), Pacific Northwest Division. The project includes eleven utilities and five infrastructure partners. The five-year project involves 112 megawatts of responsive resources featuring both load and generation, which will be coordinated by a transactive signal, scheduled to be up and running by Sept. 2012. These assets include everything from home energy systems, distributed generation, and numerous other resources on the targeted list of Smart Grid assets. This project is a significant investment in our BPA's Technology Innovation portfolio - the agency is contributing $10 million with an additional $10 million coming from DOE in the form of matching funds.

BPA's role is to coordinate with Battelle to create a regional business case for smart grid technologies, lead the overall public outreach and communication effort and support research and infrastructure design. The project will result in an installed base of smart grid assets and smart grid implementation strategies for the region. It will stimulate the regional and national economy through job creation and development of smart grid related industry.
