Photovoltaic

Photovoltaic (PV) play a role in significantly upgrading the robustness of the U.S. electric utility grid. The use of solar power distributes power production to the user, rather than locating it in large, centralized facilities. PV deployment minimizes the need for development of new centralized generation in capacity-constrained locations on the utility's transmission and distribution system. PV is also a good alternative to expansion of distribution lines to remote locations where line cost per construction mile is high. PV systems dispersed throughout an electrical system lessen the effects of outages to the centralized system, including the prevention of cascading outages that affect large areas.
