Dispatchable DSM
DSM allows utilities to directly alter usage to reduce peak demand. By curtailing non-essential electricity use during heavy-load hours, utilities manage their systems so as not to need additional generation for the peak demand hours. This is called 'peak shaving' and means that customers have less chance of paying an extra demand charges. Programs that shut off electricity to specific energy-using devices such as water heaters, air conditioners, and swimming pool pumps provide the utility flexibility in load management while reducing the need for additional generation.
