Energy Efficient Lighting

Updates and News

LED lamps are here! In the April 2013 Implementation Manual BPA added retail measures for LEDs. In June 2013, Fluid Market Strategies integrated retail LEDs in to the Simple Steps, Smart Savings™ program. In October 2013 we added measures for direct mail, direct install and over-the-counter LEDs.

These measures are evolving; expect to see these measures reviewed at the RTF annually

The Benefits of Energy Efficient Lighting

Efficient lighting options like compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and light emitting diodes (LEDs) use about 75% less energy that an incandescent bulb. In addition, CFLs and LEDs produce much less heat, so they are safer to operate and last at least six times longer.

How BPA Supports Efficient Lighting

BPA is a key player in the region, developing and maintaining energy efficiency measures that meet total resource cost effectiveness. BPA works with the Regional Technical Forum to ensure that lighting savings has the most accurate inputs and is appropriately assessing the impacts of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA).

In addition, BPA provides regional coordination of the promotion Simple Steps, Smart Savings™ in collaboration with northwest public and investor-owned utilities. Simple Steps, Smart Savings is primarily a retail program, promoting CFLs, lighting fixtures and showerheads at the point of purchase through merchandising, in-store education, and incentives. The Simple Steps, Smart Savings promotion has been active since April of 2010 and replaced the former Change-a-Light CFL promotion (2006-2010). Fluid Market Strategies is the current implementer for the promotion.
