Environmental Stewardship
While development of the Columbia River hydropower system has brought multiple benefits to the Northwest, it has come at a cost to fish and wildlife, particularly the region’s iconic salmon. As a result, BPA helps fund and manage the largest fish and wildlife program in the world. This program includes hundreds of projects to repair spawning habitat, open up tributaries through water purchases and leases, improve hatchery improvements, protect habitat and control predators.

BPA continues to work with federal and state agencies, Northwest tribes and other stakeholders to make the Columbia Basin’s rivers and habitat better for fish and wildlife.
