BPA Tribal Student Scholarships and Summer Internships

BPA interacts with Northwest Tribes, to meet our power, transmission, and fish and wildlife trust responsibilities under the Northwest Power Act and other federal mandates and actively looks for educational employment opportunities for tribal students. There are several exciting opportunities available to tribal students right now.

BPA offered scholarships to Eastern Washington University
BPA Tribal Affairs sponsors the American Indian Achievement Regional Scholarship at Eastern Washington University (ESU) located in Cheney, WA. For the 2008-2009 academic year, a four-year undergraduate and a two-year graduate tuition scholarship will be awarded to qualified applicants in all degree areas offered at EWU. Applications were due to the EWU Financial Aid and Scholarship Office in mid March, for more information about the scholarships contact Bob Shank at 509-358-7357 or email rlshank@bpa.gov.

BPA offering five tribal students summer 2008 internships
BPA in partnership with American Science and Engineering Society (AISES) and Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho is offering a limited number of student summer internships. These internships expose Native American college students to challenging professional experiences and serve as an effective way to identify top candidates for employment.

There will be internships in Environment, Fish and Wildlife focused on tribal, fish, wildlife, and/or environmental areas and in Transmission and Power Services focused on engineering. All interested students are encouraged to apply before March 15, 2008. Application materials are available on the AISES website. For more information about the program contact Buzz Cobell at 503-230-5069 or email glcobell@bpa.gov.

High school summer internships at BPA
Students get a unique opportunity to work for BPA, be a part of a team that helps maintain electrical service for the entire Pacific Northwest and join the Community High School Outreach Program. Internships start in June and end in August. Interns gain valuable on-site experience with different crews, including Operators, Lineman, Electricians and Engineers and work at BPA's Vancouver, WA offices or in a regional office near them. The pay is $2,500 for the first summer and $3,500 for the second summer.
