Daughter of Charlottesville residents honored

by the Department of Energy

PORTLAND, Ore. -

The Bonneville Power Administration, an agency under the U.S. Dept. of Energy, presented one of its highest honors, the Administrator's Unsung Hero Award, to Valerie Roadman, daughter of George and Joan Graves of Charlottesville, Va., at a ceremony held March 18 at its Portland, Ore., headquarters.

The award, part of the agency's 2005 Administrator's Excellence Awards, recognizes outstanding achievements by employees whose innovation, initiative, superior service or courageous acts have made exceptional contributions to BPA's mission, to the electric utility industry or to the local community.

Roadman, a public utilities specialist, began her career at BPA in 1970. She maintains a low profile, but she stands out and shines as an unsung hero. Throughout her career, Roadman has made significant contributions to BPA through her consistent efforts and dedication. She respects the diversity of the agency, and her skill at developing and maintaining customer relationships has had a positive impact on the agency's business relationships.

BPA Administrator Steve Wright said the award recognizes Roadman ". . . for her many years of superior service and exceptional contribution to BPA's mission and the region we serve."

The agency, a wholesale power-marketing agency that sells electric power from 31 federal dams and one nonfederal nuclear plant, employs about 3,100 people throughout its 300,000-square-mile service territory.

Roadman, a native of Charlottesville, graduated from Albemarle High School and attended Radford College. She went on to receive her degree in business administration: general management and psychology from Portland State University while working at BPA. She currently lives in Portland, Ore., with her husband, Stanley Bjorum.
