What puts the snap in a Venus Fly Trap? More than 250 students from every corner of Washington state tackle questions such as this during the 48th annual Washington state Science and Engineering Fair, April 1 and 2 at Olympic College in Bremerton. Individuals, teams and school class groups from grades 1 through 12 will participate.
"These students come up with some of the most amazing ideas for their projects," said Lois Lugg, fair director and Bonneville Power Administration electrical engineer. Some of this year's projects take on questions such as: Does the type of nail polish affect scraping resistance? Which toothpaste best removes coffee stains? Do crickets prefer homes with more than one door?
The students will set up their tabletop displays and discuss their experiments with judges from science and engineering fields. Elementary and middle school exhibits are displayed and judged April 1. Those finalists and the high school exhibits are judged April 2, with awards presented at 6 p.m. April 2 at Mountain View Middle School.
The science fair is designed to advance science education and foster interest in science and engineering careers. Plaques and trophies worth $2,000 will be awarded by the science fair organization. Private donors, businesses, and professional organizations will give additional prizes totaling $1,400. The gold and silver medallists in the senior division will win expense-paid trips to the International Science and Engineering Fair, May 8, in Phoenix, Ariz.
The public may view the student projects free of charge from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, April 2 at the Olympic College Bremer Student Center, 1600 Chester Ave., Bremerton, Wash.
The fair sponsors include Olympia College, Rotary Club of East Bremerton, Bonneville Power Administration, U.S. Bancorp, the city of Bremerton, Telebyte Northwest and Web Design by Raven.
Further information is available at the Washington state Science and Engineering Fair Web site at: www.wssef.org. The winners in this year's competition will be posted on this Web site late Saturday afternoon, April 2.
