One or more armed vandals caused $50,000 damage to fiber optic equipment on an electrical transmission tower located about a fourth of a mile north of Coyner Road in Redmond, the Bonneville Power Administration reports. The agency is offering up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrators.
The damage was detected April 15 during routine maintenance and system checks by customers of BPA. The fiber optic cable is used to remotely control transmission equipment and to carry data for the customers. The equipment is part of a 230-kilovolt system serving central Oregon.
Deschutes County Sheriff and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are investigating the incident, which occurred on a remote location. Anyone with information is urged to call the sheriff's office or the BPA crime witness line.
BPA offers up to $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of individuals vandalizing government property. Since 1994, BPA's Crime Witness program has generated hundreds of tips resulting in dozens of arrests, thousand of dollars of recovered property and, most important, deterrence of future crime. Cumulative savings since the program began total more than $4 million. To report information or tips, please call the Crime Witness Hotline at (800) 437-2744.
