LaGrande ranchers receive prestigious stream protection award
Media invited to ceremony and tour of project
PORTLAND, Ore. -
PORTLAND, Ore. * The Oregon State Land Board has awarded the 2004 Stream Restoration Award to owners of the Alta Cunha and Moss Creek ranches for their innovative efforts to restore streambeds, stream banks and wetland habitat along seven miles of local creeks and the main stem of the Grande Ronde River located in Longley Meadows, just west of LaGrande, Ore.
The ranchers and project partners from a variety of organizations will be recognized for their efforts during a tour of the newly designed and constructed Bear Creek Channel on the Grande Ronde River. Vance McGowan of Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife, Allen Childs of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation and Alan Bahn of Natural Resources Conservation Service will conduct the tour. Veterans of channel relocation projects, these three partners will explain the reasons for implementing the project, the methodology behind the new
channel design and the anticipated outcomes of the project.
The Longley Meadows Project partners include several local, state and federal agencies. The total cost of the project was $250,000, of which the Bonneville Power Administration contributed $145,000.

A bus will take everyone out to the site, which is approximately one-half hour away. Recognitions will be made at the site and lunch provided.
