BONUS SESSIONS
Conference attendees are invited to stay after the conference to attend one of two bonus sessions offered Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 29,2004, 2:30-4:30 p.m.:
Energy Efficiency Session on Post 2006 Conservation Resources
Kick-off regional discussions on Post 2006 Conservation Resources.
Host: Mike Weedall, Vice President, Energy Efficiency, BPA
This session will be presented in the Multnomah/Clackamas room, 2:30-4:30 p.m.
Come participate in an open discussion of how conservation can best be structured and delivered in the post-2006 time period. No set agenda, just you and your peers giving BPA much needed input.
Technology and Program Innovation Sessions
All sessions will be presented in the Clark/Washington Room at the DoubleTree Hotel, Jantzen Beach.
2:30-3:00 p.m.
Title: Leveraging Load Research and Customer Consumption Data to Improve Circuit Utilization
Presenter: Rick Brakken, Senior Vice President, Nexus Energy Software
This presentation will explore how to optimize circuit utilization by integrating customer consumption data with GIS and SCADA systems through an innovative profiling methodology. It will feature case studies of pilots conducted by two mid-sized US utilities, with a particular focus on the approach, results and expected benefits.
3:00-3:30 p.m.
Title: Distribution System Impacts & Benefits from Renewable Distributed Generation within the Chino Basin Mini-grid - A Case Study of the Commonwealth Energy PIER Renewables RD&D Program.
Presenter: Patrick Lilly, Itron, Inc., Vancouver, Washington
This presentation will discuss the planning and analysis phase of this three year California RD&D Program and will focus primarily on the key elements that address the expected impacts and potential capital deferral, O&M and other benefits of renewable distributed generation on the local distribution system within the Commonwealth mini-grid. This RD&D Program is jointly funded by the California Energy Commission PIER Program and private match funding from various energy companies, including Commonwealth Energy, Itron and CH2M Hill.
3:30 to 4:00 p.m.
Title: Application of Standby Power Remote-Controlled Demand Response for Grid Stability
Presenter: Harold Jarrett, President, OmniMetrix LLC, Norcross, GA
Approximately 50,000 MW of standby generation capacity is sitting idle 99% of the time in the US. While this equipment is typically started upon loss of grid power, it may also be started automatically upon detection of grid instability. The result is the transfer of customer demand off the grid and onto the generator. Benefit is delivered to the utility through fast, large-scale demand reduction, freeing up critical reactive power to stabilize the grid. Benefit to the machine owner is delivered through earlier transfer from the grid, minimizing interruptions of available power. The process is simple and affordable, allowing hundreds of emergency megawatts of demand reduction to be made available in a region through a cooperative program between the utility and its customers. The presentation will review the processes and show typical examples.
4:00-4:30 p.m.
Title: Implementing Automated Load Shedding Without Compromising Production
Presenter: Bob Zak, Sales Director, Powerit Solutions
Automated load shedding is an efficient solution for reducing escalating energy costs in industrial facilities. This session will focus on how properly managed load shedding can reduce electrical utility bills without negative impact to production, quality or safety. The speaker will also discuss other automated energy functions such as utility curtailment program implementation, sub metering and smart energy accounting.
