BPA's Strategic Direction
BPA’s fundamental purpose is to provide reliable low-cost power and transmission service to the Pacific Northwest. At the same time, the agency increasingly finds itself in the center of a complex range of new energy industry issues and environmental challenges.
To stimulate renewable energy generated in the region, BPA continues to be a leader in the integration of renewable energy, particularly wind power. BPA currently has over 2,000 MW of wind energy on the system; this is expected to grow to 4,000 MW by 2011. This requires that BPA bring innovative solutions to the challenges of integrating this new energy supply into the region’s power grid.
In addition to providing low-cost hydroelectric power and transmission while mitigating the effects on fish and wildlife, BPA is investing in its transmission system through major expansion and moving to a smarter grid. In collaboration with regional partners, BPA is participating in the testing of new, groundbreaking technologies that not only will make the grid smarter, but also to make it more secure, reliable, safe and efficient. In addition, BPA continues to raise the bar by aggressively pursuing energy conservation through energy efficiency programs to assist customers in conserving energy. BPA is well positioned to continue to provide its customers with reliable, low-cost, clean power and transmission.
