Transmission

The transmission system, also called the power grid, distributes electricity from its source (e.g.--dams) to communities. BPA operates about 75% of transmission lines in the Northwest.

These lines (called high voltage lines) are like superhighways distributing billions of watts of electricity every hour of every day. Once transmission lines arrive at substations in your community, your local utility usually takes responsibility for distributing electricity over smaller power lines to homes and businesses.
