About the I-5 Corridor Reinforcement Project EIS
(DOE/EIS-0436)

Information about the I-5 Corridor Reinforcement Project, Environmental Impact Statement process, alternatives, schedule and documents.

BPA is preparing an environmental impact statement to evaluate the impacts of a proposed 500-kilovolt transmission line and associated substations in BPA's service area. The transmission line would be in southwestern Washington and northwestern Oregon and would cross the Columbia River. See factsheet and map for general information about the project.

Use this section to find out more about the EIS, including:

  • Why the I-5 Corridor Reinforcement Project is needed and an EIS is being prepared;
  • What will be included in the EIS;
  • Where the I-5 Corridor Reinforcement Project could be located;
  • How the Draft EIS will be prepared;
  • Who will prepare the Draft EIS;
  • Cooperating Agencies;
  • The schedule for preparing the EIS;
  • Information about government-to-government consultation.

BPA wants the public to participate in the EIS process. See Getting Involved to learn how you can participate.

EIS Process and Documents

The EIS process consists of several steps, each with opportunities for you to get involved. These steps begin with a Notice of Intent (74 Federal Register 52482, October 13, 2009) and letters to the public to announce the scoping process. Scoping is an important time when the public can help BPA identify issues and provide suggestions about the project. The overall goal of the scoping process is to define the scope of issues that will be addressed, analyzed and included in the EIS. The public scoping period closed Dec. 14, 2009.

BPA is beginning to gather information for the Draft EIS that BPA will prepare for this project. After the Draft EIS is completed, BPA will release it for a 45-day public comment period. BPA will also hold public meetings to accept comments. After the end of the Draft EIS comment period, BPA will prepare a Final EIS that will include responses to the comments received. After the Final EIS is released, BPA will release a Record of Decision. These and other EIS-related documents will be available for downloading and browsing on the Documents page. A description of each step and how you can be involved is included in our BPA NEPA Brochure.
