Market prices crater What a difference a year makes!

Market prices at Mid-Columbia could re-define the China Syndrome as they continue to fall. Last May the price averaged $276 per megawatt hour; this May, the average was $22. And June prices are proving to be just as stingy at $11 this year compared to $70 in 2001.

The sluggish economy is certainly a factor, but good water conditions on the Columbia River are doing their part to dampen prices. Snowpack has been running at about 110 percent of average from February through May, and the June final forecast of water moving past The Dalles is 100 million acre feet, January to July. That's 93 percent of average -- a good year by any definition but particularly ample given the poor economy and reduced loads.

Natural streamflow through mid-June, by the way, is 112 percent of the 60-year average, which is about in line with the 1995-99 average for this month. So no wonder the low market prices as the system moves in and out of spill mode both for fish and economic reasons.
