Web-enabled, Programmable Thermostats in Portable Classrooms Field Test

Abstract
Several Washington State School Districts installed web-enabled programmable thermostats to control the all-electric, HVAC equipment in their modular classroom buildings, finding significant reductions in electricity use during a typical year. Based on the lessons learned from these School Districts, Bonneville Power Administration funded the development of a Whole-Building Regression Analysis tool to estimate and verify HVAC savings associated with adding web-enabled programmable thermostats to all-electric, modular classroom buildings.

This Whole-Building Regression Analysis tool was found to accurately estimate savings within a 90 confidence interval, when the measure resulted in more than 20 percent reduction in building electricity use and temperature was the primary factor for all significant electric loads.
