Energy Efficiency Emerging Technologies

BPA launched the Energy Efficiency Emerging Technologies (E3T) initiative to engage in a collaborative effort to "fill the pipeline" with innovative energy efficiency solutions and technologies that promise significant region-wide energy savings. To learn more, read the E3T Fact Sheet (PDF, 260 KB)

In collaboration with Northwest utilities, BPA Office of Technology Innovation, Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (NEEA) and other stakeholders, BPA Energy Efficiency identified a number of emerging technologies it is supporting with pilot programs, testing or other research and development activities. They include:

  • Advanced lighting technology
  • Self-correcting building heating, ventilation and cooling (HVAC) controls technology
  • High-efficiency low-lift vapor compression system
  • Automatic diagnostic for package HVAC
  • Low-temperature heat pump
  • Mini-split heat pump
  • Grocery store gasket, door closure and strip curtains
  • Packaged rooftop units

Technology Advisory Groups

BPA is engaging utilities and regional energy efficiency stakeholders to create and sustain a community of experts to guide identification, assessment and dissemination of innovative energy-efficient end-use technologies. The result is the formation of Technology Advisory Groups (TAGs), which will:

  • Select and analyze technologies that bridge targeted emerging technologies into regional energy efficiency programs (fill the pipeline)
  • Link and integrate Northwest regional stakeholders efforts by providing a consistent stream of credible energy savings opportunities that utilities, end-users and other stakeholders value
  • Maintain strong ties to Northwest, national and global experts and allied organizations to cost-effectively synergize efforts through collaboration, information sharing and development of more uniform processes

TAGs are currently assessing technologies in the area of lighting and HVAC, and proposed future TAGs include electronics, commercial and residential buildings, energy management, consumer products, enabling technologies and more. To learn more about the work conducted by the TAGs, download the following status reports:

Regional Energy Efficiency Technology Roadmap

BPA is working with regional stakeholders to create a Regional Energy Efficiency Technology Roadmap. The roadmap will identify priorities, drivers and needs; identify energy efficiency technologies to meet those needs and then provide risk and gap assessments of those technologies.

With a scheduled completion date of March 2010, the roadmap will serve as an important tool to help guide the actions of both the BPA Office of Technology Innovation and a soon-to-be-formed regional emerging technology advisory committee. The regional emerging technology advisory committee will be formed based on a recommendation from BPA and NEEA as a result of a request from the Northwest Energy Efficiency Taskforce.
