BPA proposes to fund upgrades to aging facilities at the Klickitat Hatchery, on the Klickitat River east of Glenwood, Washington. BPA is preparing an environmental impact statement on the effects of the proposed upgrades, which include improvements to the water supply and water treatment/discharge systems, and to spawning and rearing facilities (including a new building to house circular rearing tanks). The upgrades would allow the spring Chinook program, operated by Yakama Nation and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, to transition to a program that uses natural-origin fish in the broodstock. National Marine Fisheries Service funds operation of the hatchery under the Mitchell Act; BPA is not proposing to take over that funding. During the comment period for scoping the EIS (October 6 through November 27, 2017), four members of the public and one government agency (EPA) provided comments. The EIS is currently scheduled to be published in summer of 2018.
