BPA is proposing to fund the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho’s Lower Meander Project. This project follows earlier phases of habitat improvement actions designed to support federally-listed endangered Kootenai River white sturgeon in the Kootenai River. This project is located upstream of the city of Bonners Ferry between River Mile 153.5 and 155, upstream of Kootenai River Bridge. It is designed to enhance islands, side channels and to restore streambanks and includes pool excavation, island construction, bank grading, revegetation, and large wood structure installation along banks and in channels. To understand the potential environmental impacts of this proposal, BPA will prepare an environmental assessment under the National Environmental Policy Act. The EA will describe anticipated impacts to natural and human resources and may include mitigation measures that would help avoid or minimize impacts. During this process, the agencies will work with landowners, federal, state and local agencies, interest groups, and Tribes. You are invited to comment on the proposal.
