The power generated by federal dams in the Columbia River Basin flows through BPA’s Real-Time Hydro Duty Scheduling group. The team has an enormous responsibility balancing the many needs of the region while working to keep electricity flowing to homes and business.
Locke ChristmanSupervisory Physical Scientist for Power OperationsTo maintain a stable electric grid, power generation must always match power demand. Some of the most challenging shifts involve either sudden loss of demand, like when a transmission line goes down, or a significant change in how much power is being generated, like when streamflows increase rapidly due to rain or melting snow in the upper basins. When these things happen it is a matter of maintaining a cool head and following our established procedures and priorities.
