As a Power System Control field engineer in northeastern Oregon, Sadie Shattuck spends her days visiting substations and checking on BPA’s operational communications network. This vital network lets BPA’s system operators see what’s happening on the grid and remotely control the equipment anywhere in BPA’s 300,000 square-mile service territory.

The Power System Control team is responsible for the reliable operation and maintenance of BPA’s communications network. This system includes more than 13,500 pieces of communications equipment spread out over control centers, 261 substations, 125-plus radio sites, and thousands of miles of fiber optic cables.

Without this communications system, BPA’s automated systems for the control and visibility of grid operations wouldn’t function.
