BPA, in collaboration with regional and national partners, is investigating the potential benefits of advanced learning thermostats in residential applications. Our work to date has demonstrated that certain products can increase the efficiency of energy use by HVAC systems. Beginning in 2017, BPA will reimburse its customers for incentive programs for qualifying products.

Smart learning thermostats are still an emerging technology and looking forward, BPA will continue to research products in this category and investigate how data from these devices can be used for measuring and verifying impact on energy use. BPA is also continuing to evaluate energy savings in field trials and investigate how homeowners and utilities can benefit from use of this technology for demand response and other opportunities.
