The Benefits of Irrigation Hardware Upgrades

Upgrading to more efficient irrigation hardware improves irrigation system performance and results in improved uniformity. These improvements make it possible to meet crop water needs with fewer hours of irrigation, and therefore, less energy use.

Water-efficient irrigation hardware is designed to minimize water waste and maximize water application to the benefit of the crop. The ideal application of water is in an amount that meets the need of the growing plant, and avoids extended soil saturation and runoff. By increasing application precision and reducing unneeded applications, water can be conserved and energy can be saved.

Leaks reduce system pressure, causing a poor sprinkler distribution pattern—reducing system efficiency and increasing costs. As motors have to work harder to make for the loss in system pressure, significant leaks can also cause motor overloading and shorten motor life.

Significant energy and water savings come from replacing old leaking sprinklers, retrofitting center pivots, and installing drop tubes and converting irrigation systems to low pressure systems. Uniformity is also improved because the water discharge point is closer to the ground, reducing wind drift of the water.

Efficiency upgrades are also available for wheel-line hubs and levelers.
